System Implications of the Different Powering Distributions for the ATLAS Upgrade Strips Tracker
AbstractThis paper compares the two novel approaches for the power distribution of the ATLAS Upgrade strips tracker modules, serial and DC-DC powering, from the point of view of a system. Numerous variables have been taken into account, such as total power dissipation and power efficiency, system reliability and protection, noise performances, impact on the material budget of the tracker, and services needs and re-usability
Conflict behavior and conflict management in the organizations
Some people think conflict is a topic that should not be discussed and that we should not engage in
conflict. Productively engaging in conflict is always valuable. Most people are willing and interested
in resolving their conflicts; they just need the appropriate skill set and opportunities in which to
practice this skill set. Without a conflict skill set, people want to avoid conflict, hoping it will go away
or not wanting to make a “big deal out of nothing.” Research and personal experiences show us that,
when we avoid conflict, the conflict actually escalates and our thoughts and feelings become more
negative. Through conflict self-awareness we can more effectively manage our conflicts and therefore
our professional and personal relationships. Furthermore, by discussing issues related to conflict
management, teams can establish an expected protocol to be followed by team members when in
conflict. All teams and organizations have a conflict culture (the way the team responds to conflict).
However, most teams never discuss what the conflict culture is, therefore providing the opportunity
for individual team members to make assumptions that can be counterproductive to the team.
Practicing one’s conflict management skills leads to more successful engagement in conflict with
outcomes of relief, understanding, better communication, and greater productivity for both the
individual and the team. When we manage our conflicts more effectively, we use less energy on the
burdensome tasks such as systemic conflict and get to spend more of our energy on our projects at
work and building our relationships
Cognitive outcome and gamma noise power unrelated to neuregulin 1 and 3 variation in schizophrenia
Background
Neuregulins are a family of signalling proteins that orchestrate a broad range of cellular responses. Four genes encoding Neuregulins 1–4 have been identified so far in vertebrates. Among them, Neuregulin 1 and Neuregulin 3 have been reported to contribute to an increased risk for developing schizophrenia. We hypothesized that three specific variants of these genes (rs6994992 and rs3924999 for Neuregulin 1 and rs10748842 for Neuregulin 3) that have been related to this illness may modify information processing capacity in the cortex, which would be reflected in electrophysiological parameters (P3b amplitude or gamma noise power) and/or cognitive performance.
Methods
We obtained DNA from 31 patients with schizophrenia and 23 healthy controls and analyzed NRG1 rs6994992, NRG1 rs3924999 and NRG3 rs10748842 promoter polymorphisms by allelic discrimination with real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We compared cognitive outcome, P300 amplitude parameters and an electroencephalographic measure of noise power in the gamma band between the groups dichotomized according to genotype.
Results
Contrary to our hypothesis, we could not detect any significant influence of variation in Neuregulin 1/Neuregulin 3 polymorphisms on cognitive performance or electrophysiological parameters of patients with schizophrenia.
Conclusions
Despite our findings, we cannot discard that other genetic variants and, more likely, interactions between those variants and with genetic variation related to different pathways may still influence cerebral processing in schizophrenia
Direct resolution of unoccupied states in solids via two photon photoemission
Non-linear effects in photoemission are shown to open a new access to the
band structure of unoccupied states in solids, totally different from hitherto
used photoemission spectroscopy. Despite its second-order nature, strong
resonant transitions occur, obeying exact selection rules of energy, crystal
symmetry, and momentum. Ab-initio calculations are used to demonstrate that
such structures are present in low-energy laser spectroscopy experimental
measurements on Si previously published. Similar resonances are expected in
ultraviolet angle-resolved photoemission spectra, as shown in a model
calculation on Al.Comment: 12 pages, including 4 figure

Chiral transition-metal complexes as Brønsted-acid catalysts for the asymmetric Friedel-Crafts hydroxyalkylation of indoles.
The Friedel-Crafts reaction between 3,3,3-trifluoropyruvates and indoles is efficiently catalysed by the iridium complex [(η5-C 5Me5)Ir{(R)-Prophos}(H2O)][SbF 6]2 (1) with up to 84% ee. Experimental data and theoretical calculations support a mechanism involving the Brønsted-acid activation of the pyruvate carbonyl by the protons of the coordinated water molecule in 1. Water is not dissociated during the process and, therefore, the catalytic reaction occurs with no direct interaction between the substrates and the metal. Coal mine ventilation air methane combustion in a catalytic reverse flow reactor: Influence of emission humidity
The role of the humidity content on the performance of catalytic reverse flow reactors (RFRs) for the abatement of methane emissions from coal mines is studied in this manuscript. It has been demonstrated that this technique is very useful for the abatement, and even upgrading, of these emissions. However, the effect of humidity on the reactor performance has not been addressed yet, in spite of being well known that water is an inhibitor in catalytic combustion. Experimental studies in a lab-scale isothermal fixed bed reactor demonstrated that water decreases the activity of a palladium on alumina catalyst for the combustion of methane, but this inhibition is entirely reversible, results fitting well to a Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetic model. Then, the influence of water was studied in a bench-scale RFR operating at near adiabatic conditions at different switching times (100–600 s) and methane feed concentrations (2700–7200 ppm). Finally, a mathematical model for the reverse flow reactor, including the kinetic model with water inhibition, has been validated using the experimental results. This model is of key importance for designing this type of reactors for the treatment of mine ventilation emissions
Conversación con Francisco Jarauta
A few days before meeting Francisco Jarauta for our conversation, we received a text of his, “Los tiempos de la arquitectura”, which we have included in the digital version of this second number of the magazine. It has the same title as the opening lecture of the 2013-2014 Academic Course, a lecture he had given on the 26th September in the assembly room of the Engineering and Architecture School at the University of Zaragoza, reason why we understood that he thought of our conversation as having already started then
Diffraction of swift atoms after grazing scattering from metal surfaces: N/Ag(111) system
6 páginas, 6 figuras.-- PACS number(s): 79.20.Rf, 79.60.Bm, 34.20.Cf, 61.85.+pDiffraction patterns produced by grazing scattering of fast N atoms from a Ag(111) surface are investigated by employing the surface eikonal approximation. This method is a distorted-wave theory that takes into account the coherent addition of contributions coming from different projectile paths. In the model the projectile-surface potential is obtained from an accurate density-functional theory calculation. The dependence of the scattered projectile spectra on impact energy and incidence channel is analyzed, and possible incident direction and energy range for the observation of the interference patterns are predicted. In addition, it is found that as a result of the high reactivity of N atoms, asymmetries of the surface potential might be detected through their effects on diffraction patterns.M.S.G. acknowledges financial support from CONICET,
